Signs of Alcohol Addiction

Signs (what can be observed physically) and symptoms (what the patient feels) of
problematic alcohol use

  • increased quantity or frequency of drinking
  • high tolerance or lack of “hangover” symptoms
  • drinking at “inappropriate” times (e.g. first thing in morning)
  • drinking in “atypical” places (e.g. church or work)
  • wanting to be in situations where alcohol will be present and avoiding those where it is not
  • changes in friendships
  • avoiding contact or having conflicts with loved ones/significant others
  • hiding alcohol or hiding while drinking
  • needing alcohol in order to function in everyday life
  • mood swings
  • depression, euphoria (feeling high), or anxiety
  • poor motivation
